Philadelphia has lost another true jazz giant. The great Trudy Pitts has passed away at age 78. She will be forever missed. She was not only a great pianist and organist, she was a great teacher, mentor and friend to many coming up through Philadelphia. May she rest in peace.

Trudy Pitts, a legend in the Philly jazz scene and one of the great practitioners of the Philly Hammond B3 organ sound, has passed away at the age of 78. In addition to making a series of recordings for the highly regarded Prestige jazz label in the 1960s, Pitts and her husband, Mr. C (drummer Bill Carney), Pitts was a fixture in the Philly jazz community, and was the first jazz artist play a concert on the Kimmel Center’s 7,000 pipe organ. Jazz in Philly has had a tough year, and to lose another pillar in the scene is a loss for the whole city. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Trudy Pitts. Sadly, we’ll not see her kind again.
